Veterans urged to share stories

Evesham Editorial 14th Dec, 2019   0

AN INVITATION for former servicemen and women to share their experiences of the Second World War or other conflicts has been issued by Evesham’s Royal British Legion chiefs.

With 2020 marking 75 years since the formal end of the Second Word War, legion members in the town are keen to hear from any veterans who have a record of their experiences.

Branch President Jeff King told the Observer the legion was keen to hear from anyone who served their country, either in the two world wars or subsequent action such as the Falklands War.

“While we would welcome hearing from veterans, any relatives of servicemen and women who have record a family member’s experiences and would like to share it with us would be appreciated,” he said.

“If perchance we receive sufficient stories, we could look at getting them published, perhaps as a book.”

The call came as legion chiefs reminded servicemen and women in and around the Vale that help is on hand at their pop in shop at Wallace House in Oat Street.

“We are forever on the lookout for those serving and ex-servicemen and women who need somebody to chat to or need advice on how to gain help with any problems they may have,” Mr King said.

“Over the years, the Evesham branch has served the Armed Forces, men and women and their dependants with great pride and we will continue to provide this service for as long as we can.”

The pop in shop is manned every Tuesday from midday to 3pm and all information is kept strictly confidential – a private room can be made available if needed.

Legion staff can also visit veterans and serving members of the Armed Forces in their own homes if required and anyone interested in joining the legion can attend meetings at Wallace House on the second Tuesday each month from 7.30pm.
