Veterans mark Battle of Britain

VETERANS from the Evesham Royal Air Force Association (RAFA) were on hand to mark the annual Battle of Britain parade and ceremony at the town’s Waterside cemetery.

Last Friday’s (September 13) was attended by the Deputy Lieutenant of Worcestershire, Georgina Britten-Long and civic guests including the chairman of Wychavon District Council, Coun Francis Smith, Mayor of Evesham Coun

Mark Goodge, Town Clerk Stuart Carter and representative from the town council – Sue Amor, Andrew Dyke, Alan Booth, Robert Hale, Jenny Johnson and Jo Sandalls.

Also in attendance were several RAF and Army veterans and members of ex-service organisation with their standard bearers from the Royal Air Force Association, the British Legion and the Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters Association.




Youngsters and staff from The De Montfort School, St Andrew’s CE School, St Mary’s Catholic Primary School and Swan Lane First School also lent their support to the event.

The parade was led by vice chairman of the Evesham branch of the Royal British Legion, Roy Bates. The Rev Mark Binney officiated at the ceremony with the Last Post and Reveille being played by Sue Sollis.


Branch president Jeff Brereton, who served in the RAF in the Second World War, recited the RAFA dedication before wreaths were laid by Mrs Britten-Long and Phillip Speed.

The ceremony came to an emotional close as pupils from the four schools laid crosses on each grave.
