VE Day 80th anniversary commemorations - Broadway, Evesham and Pershore

Around the Vale,  communities will be marking the 80th anniversary of VE Day on Thursday, March 8, with a series of events.

Here is a round-up of what is happening in Broadway, Evesham and Pershore.

In Broadway, there will be an Act of Remembrance taking place at the war memorial on the village green, High Street at 10.45am with representatives from schools and Royal British Legion.

At 6.30pm there will be a peal of bells at St Eadburgha’s Church on Snowshill Road. The day will finish with the lighting of a beacon at Broadway Tower at 9.30pm.

A programme of events to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day in Evesham with a Royal British Legion service at the war memorial in Abbey Park, followed by a proclamation in Market Square at 11.30am.

At the town hall from 12 noon to 3pm, members of the public are invited to see a wartime display of memories along with refreshments.




This will be followed by an afternoon piano singalong of 1940s classics at Wallace House Community Centre in Oat Street from 3.30pm to 4.30pm to which all are welcome. An afternoon tea will be served from 2pm to 6pm.

Meanwhile, in Pershore, commemorations are to include a proclamation from the town crier from Chapman Court at 11am, followed by refreshments in town hall from 11.15am until 1pm.


There will be a beacon lighting in Abbey Park from 8pm. On May 9 there is a 1940s-themed evening at Pershore Football Club which starts at 7pm. Email [email protected] for tickets.

On Saturday, May 10, from 10am to 4pm at Throckmorton Parish Hall, an exhibition on the importance of Pershore Airfield during the Second World War will feature talks and entertainment from by all-woman trio, The Spitfires, who specialise in singing wartime songs.
