Vale residents asked to have their say on new Wychavon design code

RESIDENTS are being asked to have their say on a new design code that will shape higher‑quality development across Wychavon district.

The Wychavon Design code sets clear expectations for developers when creating new housing schemes, ensuring proposals reflect the district’s distinctive character.

It requires developments to integrate well with existing communities and landscapes, and to demonstrate strong principles around sustainability, climate resilience, walkable neighbourhoods, and the protection of important views.

Detailed standards covering street layout, trees and landscaping, drainage and flood management, parking, public spaces, building appearance and materials are included in the code.

Planning applications for proposals to build ten or more homes will need to show how they follow the code.

The document will also be used to influence masterplans for large-scale schemes such as Wychavon Town, ensuring high-quality design is built in at an early stage.

Residents are being asked for their views on whether the code is clear and will be effective in promoting better development that positively integrates and enhances the local character.

Coun Emma Kearsey, Wychavon’s executive board member for planning, infrastructure and urban design, said: “We want new development to reflect what people value about where they live.

“The Wychavon Design Code sets clear standards for developers to deliver high-quality, exemplary design in context of, and complementing, its surroundings to protect the character of our towns, villages and countryside.

“At the same time, it gives developers greater clarity from the outset, helping to reduce delays and create better outcomes for our communities.”
