Vale animal sanctuary gets cash boost to care for its beasts

A VALE charity that is dedicated to rescuing and caring for neglected farm animals has been awarded a grant of £5,000.

The Farm Animal Sanctuary based at Manor Orchard Farm in Middle Littleton, received the welcome cash boost from the Movement for Good Awards, an initiative from Benefact Group, which donates more than £1million to worthwhile causes across the UK and Ireland each year.

The safe haven was established nearly 40 years ago by Jan Taylor who decided to buy a number of malnourished and diseased animals when she visited a livestock market and was distressed by what she witnessed.

Jan went on to purchase more than 60 beasts at several livestock markets in England and Wales and the farm is now home to hundreds of farm animals in need including cattle, sheep, pigs, goats, donkeys, alpacas and poultry.

Farm manager Louise Stuart said: “A £5,000 grant holds great significance for us. It provides essential funds to cover the feed and bedding for our 600 rescue animals. With rising costs, ensuring their daily needs is our top priority.

“It will also help with our veterinary expenses and one of our cherished initiatives, which involves rehoming former battery hens. We recently helped rescue 1,500 lovely Leghorn hens who had finished their laying careers.

“We are incredibly thankful for this grant and are committed to using it effectively to create a meaningful and immediate impact on the lives of our rescue animals and the community.”

Benefact Group is a family of award-winning specialist financial services companies and the third largest corporate donor to charity in the UK over 10 years. Members of the public can nominate causes close to their hearts, with regular funding rounds taking place throughout 2025.

Mark Hews, group chief executive at Benefact Group, said: “We would like to thank every single person who took the time to nominate a good cause as part of our Movement for Good Awards.

“We know that just £1,000 can make a huge difference to the incredible work that charities do and we’re looking forward to seeing how this financial boost will change lives for the better.”

Three other Worcestershire charities – all based in Kidderminster – each received donations of £1,000. They were Greatfield Small Animal Rescue, Home-Start Wyre Forest and Jellyman’s Heritage Arts.
