Evesham Editorial 2nd Aug, 2019   0

CROWN MEADOW will be transformed to the landscape of 1265 tomorrow and Sunday when a re-enactment of the Battle of Evesham takes place.

As well as the battle which will involve 500 historic re-enactors, including knights on war horses and a working siege-engine throwing watermelons 100metres across the battle area.

There will also be demonstrations of other aspects of 13th century life, including the crafts, cookery, clothing and medicine of the time.

The bloody battle was fought on August 4, 1265, between Prince Edward and Simon de Montfort. More than 4,000 soldiers were killed on Evesham’s streets and in the surrounding countryside.

The 750th anniversary of the battle was commemorated in 2015 with a fortnight of events, tours and a festival with one of the largest re-enactments in the country, as over 200 horses and soldiers took part in a parade and it has been marked every year since.

Kate Varvedo, the Battle of Evesham events manager, said: “We are delighted to be hosting the battle as an annual event where visitors can step back in time to a bygone era.

“Hundreds of re-enactors will climb into their suits of armour, grab their swords, axes and pikes and engage hand-to-hand combat in a fight ‘to the death’ four times over the weekend.”

She thanked the generosity of sponsors and supporters, adding she hoped as many people as possible would go along.

The organisors are also keen for ambassadors for the event.

Assistance is required for bucket collections, litter picking, marshalling and car parking duties.
