Trader wants award to boost Evesham's independents shops

AN IMPASSIONED plea to end the ‘chicken and egg’ cycle facing Evesham’s independent businesses has been made by an award-winning trader.

Lisa Stephansen made the call after it was revealed her JellyPickleJam business had been named as a winner in the prestigious LUXlife magazine’s Restaurant and Bar Awards.

And speaking as the popular vintage tea and gift shop celebrates its 10th birthday tomorrow (Saturday), Lisa urged shoppers to play their part in sharing the success.

“We want to share this celebration with our valued customers, whom without, us and many other high street businesses would not exist,” she said.

“We constantly hear people are disappointed with the lack of independent shops in Evesham and unless residents and tourists support those of us who are here, this will not change.

“We need to break this ‘chicken and egg’ cycle and help the town flourish by all playing our part.

“Evesham has a great range of independents, which are run by passionate, hard-working people.

“By choosing an independent store over a large chain, you are supporting local families and the community, which in turn entices more business to the town.”

The delighted founder and owner of the popular tearoom hailed the ‘Most Charming Café 2023 – Worcestershire’ honour as a boost to her staff and the business as a whole.

“COVID impacts, energy, food and cost of living increases have placed us all under pressure, and maintaining a small business through this has been like living on a knife edge,” she said.

“To receive this award gives us a boost and reassurance our friendly and unique venue is worth the tireless hard work of my team, for whom I am extremely grateful.”

The LUXlife Restaurant and Bar Awards programme is designed to award and celebrate the world’s finest food and drink establishments of the past year.

Awards co-ordinator, Holly Blackwood, said: “It has been a fantastic experience working with our winners this year.

“They have shown their expert skillset to be an experience in itself.

“From their service to their products they satisfy each and every customer whenever they are in need of some indulgence and sophistication.”
