Town urged to back next year’s 50th anniversary carnival

A RALLYING call has gone out to Pershore residents to throw their weight behind next year’s 50th anniversary carnival.

Volunteers to help organise the landmark event in the history of Pershore Carnival are being sought less than a month after this year’s event came to a close.

Hundreds of people braved the rain to lend their support to the annual carnival on Bank Holiday Monday.

After months of planning and fund-raising, Pershore Carnival’s ‘The World of Music’ themed event took over the town with a host of activities on offer.

The wet weather didn’t deter an array of stall holders while the popular carnival procession through the town’s streets went ahead as planned.

Thoughts are now turning towards the 2018 event as some of the current committee are standing down from their roles.

And organisers want to hear from town residents to ensure the 50th anniversary event goes with a bang.

A number of roles will be available for town residents to get involved with and show their support for the event which has been a fixture on the town’s calendar since 1968.

Carnival Chairman, Colin Shepherd told the Observer: “This year’s carnival was one of the best Pershore has seen for many years.

“We want to build upon this success and make the 50th celebrations even better, but to do so we need a team of people to make it happen.

“Surprisingly many people don’t realise that Pershore Carnival is organised each year by a small group of volunteers who are responsible for all the planning, organising, and fund-raising.

“Quite simply without them Pershore wouldn’t have a carnival.

“The planning and fund-raising starts almost as soon as the last one finishes. However, when you see the crowds lining the streets and the smiles on the children’s faces you know that all the hard work has been worthwhile.

“At the end of this year we will sadly be losing several committee members, so we desperately need new people to come on board.”

Anyone interested in volunteering is asked to attend the organising committee’s annual general meeting at 7pm on Monday, July 17 at Pershore and District Sports Club on Defford Road.

During the AGM the Pershore Riverside Youth Centre will be presented with £1,250 collected from the Carnival street collection.
