Town firms back scheme to cut plastic bottles

A MAJOR town-wide campaign to clamp down on ‘single-use’ plastic bottles has won the support of more than a dozen Evesham businesses.

Refill is a national tap water campaign which encourages businesses to set up stations for the public to get their water bottles refilled for free.

After initially signing up 12 businesses and organisations, Refill Evesham has been contacted by others wanting to join the scheme.

Visitors to Evesham can take a reusable water bottle into cafes, businesses and organisations displaying the blue refill sticker in their window. The scheme is supported by Evesham Town Council and Transition Evesham Vale.

“It offers benefits all round; organisations get free publicity on the nationwide refill app, members of the public benefit by not having to spend money on bottles of water and the environment has fewer plastic bottles,” said Coun Julie Tucker.

Among those involved are Herbies Coffee House, Orto Lounge, the Outside Inn and Courtyard, Delicious Cafe, Jellypicklejam, Babychinos Cafe, Raphaels Restaurant, Amber Evesham and the Almonry.

A number of retailers at The Valley have now joined the scheme including Boardman Bikes, the Crafty Cuppa, Coffee#1 or the Apple Barn.

Plastic pollution is dangerously damaging the health of the world’s oceans especially, with the main contributor being everyday plastic such as plastic bottles, and packaging. Of the 35 million plastic bottles being used every day in the UK, nearly 16 million end up in landfill.
