They’ve got blankets covered

AGE UK is offering residents the chance to get their electric blankets safety-checked and free replacements are available for those that fail.

Blankets will be tested for £2.50 between 10am and 2pm on October 30 at the Vale of Evesham Christian Centre.

There will also be the chance for people to book free home energy checks and get advice on staying safe and well this winter.

With the days getting shorter, staying warmer over the colder season can make a significant difference to the health of older people.

Station Commander Steve Andrews, from Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service’s community risk team said: “This is a great opportunity to demonstrate some of the work we do around fire prevention in the community.

“At this time of year we see an increase in incidents caused by electric blankets and would urge anyone to take advantage of these testing sessions.”

He said electric blankets should be replaced every ten years and checked every two.

“We also encourage people to regularly check for scorch marks, water damage, mould or exposed wires, and never leave an electric blanket on overnight.”

Appointments can be booked for sessions by emailing [email protected] or calling 01905 740950.
