ASPIRING musicians are being sought to showcase their talents in a prestigious competition held as part of the Evesham Festival of Music.

Talented teenagers from across the Vale are invited to take part in the festival’s Young Musician of the Year contest.

The competition regularly attracts talented Evesham youngsters and is split into two sections.

A junior section for youngsters under the age of 13 by August 31 and the standard expected for playing/singing should be working towards grade two or above.

Meanwhile the senior section is open to teenagers aged under 18 by August 31 and the standard of playing/singing should be working towards grade five or above.

All entrants must live in the catchment area of Prince Henry’s High School or The De Montfort School or within the WR11 postcode.

Solo singers and musicians are welcome as are groups but organisers have asked for no more than six members of a group.

Preliminary rounds for both sections will be held on Saturday, May 20 at the De Montfort School in the performing arts block.

The competition will be grouped into categories: piano/keyboard, voice/miscellaneous, brass/woodwind and strings including guitar

Winners of each junior preliminary round will receive a £60 prize and each senior preliminary round winner will receive £150.

Youngsters have until May 5 to apply with the final of this year’s event being held during the festival on Wednesday, June 21 at St Peter’s Church, Bengeworth.

The best runner-up from the preliminary rounds will also be invited to compete in the final.

This year’s overall winner in the junior section will win £100 while the winner of the senior competition will scoop £250 together with a trophy to keep until the next competition and a replica as a memento.

All participants in the competition receive certificates.

This year’s Evesham Festival of Music takes place from June 17 to June 24.
