Taking steps to help with reading

A BID to help adults across Evesham and Pershore who cannot read has been launched with organisers inviting local resident to attend a meeting later this month.

Read Easy UK is a national charity which gives adults a second chance to learn to read or improve their confidence with reading, working at their own pace, in the community.

It is a small charity aiming to expand the provision across the country, with 31 groups already making a difference to peoples’ lives. Read Easy depends on its volunteers and the aim is to spread the word so that people can find out about Read Easy and will hopefully want to join up with the local group in making a difference.

An estimated 2.4million adults in the UK cannot read, while another 2.5million struggle to read.

Read Easy is different from the many existing schemes to improve literacy because it provides free, one-to-one coaching in a local venue, such as a coffee bar, a community centre or library. This means that adults get personalised support that is tailored to them and don’t have to face returning to a classroom until they feel confident and ready.

Organisers John Hall and Sue Oxley have invited residents to a meeting on November 26 at 6pm in the Vale of Evesham Christian Centre in Bewdley Street to find out more.

“A Read Easy group needs the support of many people to organise activities and reach out to potential learners,” said Mr Hall.

“At the moment, we are particularly looking for people who would like to form a management team. Would you enjoy being part of a small and friendly team that makes a difference? Perhaps you have previous experience of publicity, fund-raising or networking and could share your skills.”

Mrs Oxley added: “In due course we will also be looking to recruit Reading Coaches whose role will be to work on a one to one basis with a learner.

“The good news is that Read Easy volunteers are supported through ongoing training and assistance, using a tried and tested scheme.”
