THE STORY behind the incredible discovery of Anglo Saxon treasures at Sutton Hoo, Suffolk, as world war loomed in Europe in 1939 will be the subject of March’s Pershore Heritage and History Society talk.
Speaker Paul Haywood will set out how the incredible 7th Century objects unearthed from an undisturbed ship burial chamber were designed to signal power on earth and in the hereafter.
Excavated by amateur archaeologist Basil Brown, objects including the iconic helmet were found alongside weaponry such as a pattern-welded sword suggesting they belonged to a great war leader as well as a high-ranking individual.
