FAMILIES looking for ways to keep children entertained this summer will find plenty to choose from across Worcestershire, as part of the county’s Summer of Heritage.
A packed programme of trails, events and attractions is bringing local history to life throughout the school summer holidays.
This year marks 375 years since the Battle of Worcester brought the English Civil War to an end, making it the perfect time to explore the county’s rich heritage and discover the stories that have shaped Worcestershire.
From exploring city streets in new ways to stepping into the heart of a medieval battlefield, there are activities for all ages, with many free and low-cost options.
In Worcester, families can discover the city through the new Worcester Pear Trail, until September 6, a self-guided experience allowing visitors to follow a digital route, spot colourful pear sculptures and uncover historic stories along the way.
Across the county, historic sites are opening their doors for family-friendly days out.
At Witley Court and Gardens, dramatic ruins and landscaped grounds offer a glimpse into the grandeur of one of England’s great country houses, with plenty of space to play, picnic and explore.
History is brought to life through interactive experiences such as the new Battle of Worcester digital trail, while younger visitors can take on The Knight’s Quest at The Commandery running until August 30, alongside a programme of hands-on medieval activities.
Opportunities to experience history in action can be found throughout Worcestershire.
Highlights include The Sealed Knot at Hartlebury Castle on July 25 to 26, and the Battle of Evesham from August 1 to 2, one of Europe’s largest medieval re-enactments, featuring living history camps, demonstrations and full-scale battle scenes.
For something a little different, families can head to Victory at The Lost Valley in Evesham, where a Civil War-themed adventure golf course brings history to life, or explore Droitwich Spa through Once Upon a Trail, a free storybook-themed experience complete with a children’s prize.
Free attractions include Worcester City Art Gallery and Museum, home to this summer’s Thunderbirds exhibition, and Tudor House Museum, where themed family activities bring different periods of history to life.
Families can also explore landscapes shaped by Worcestershire’s past. The Malvern Hills have inspired generations of writers and composers, while Wyre Forest, one of the UK’s largest ancient woodlands, offers miles of trails, including the popular Room on the Broom family trail.
Visitors can also enjoy major events including the Pershore Plum Festival August 29 to 31, alongside a calendar of countryside shows, transport events and festivals taking place throughout the summer.
