AN ANIMAL management student who has excelled in her industry placements has been named Student of the Year at Pershore College.

Hope Andrews, 17, who is studying Level 3 Animal Management was also named Animal Welfare Student of the Year.

During her course, Hope completed three industry placements at a local veterinary practice, reptile centre and Cotswold Wildlife Park where she grew in experience and confidence working with small mammals and primates.

Hope was commended by her employers for her industry work and will be returning to Pershore College next year to complete an Extended Diploma in Animal Management, with plans to continue studying the subject at university.

She said: “It was really unexpected but I am really happy to win Student of the Year. I was surprised at first when my tutor told me I had won the award from the Animal Management department, so to win for the whole college is just amazing.

“I wanted to join the animal management course because when I visited, the college had a lovely atmosphere and the course gives you so many different opportunities to work with a wide range of animals and build up your experience.

“At first I was unsure what I wanted to focus on, but my tutors’ support and positive feedback has really helped me develop my skills and motivated me to apply for and succeed on my industry placements.

“I am looking forward to coming back next September to complete my second year on the animal management course and am starting to look for opportunities to progress into university. Hopefully people will see me working in the animal welfare industry very soon.”

Philippa Gerrard, Head of Department for Animal Welfare, Veterinary Nursing and Sport at Pershore College, said: “Hope has had a great first year on her course, showing particular dedication to gaining industry experience throughout the year.

“Hope has been an incredibly hardworking student and her work is completed to an excellent standard whilst also being a great support for her peer in the class.

“We would like to congratulate Hope on her achievement and look forward to welcoming her back to the college for the next academic year.”

A total of 45 awards were presented on the awards evening held at Pershore College, which also saw students from Evesham New College recognised for their achievements.

More than 100 people, including proud family members, guardians and staff joined together as students were recognised with awards for their hard work, determination, and progress throughout the academic year.

Students from an array of courses at Pershore College were honoured including those enrolled on animal welfare, health, and social care, supported learning, horticulture, sport, English and maths courses.
