Study claims 83 per cent of Vale motorists are 'un-roadworthy'

A STAGGERING 83 per cent of Vale motorists are ‘un-roadworthy’ according to a new study commissioned by a leading car parts retailer.

Halfords Autocentres quizzed more than 4,000 Evesham drivers to see how roadworthy UK motorists are ahead of test changes with the aim to boost knowledge.

According to the figures, 63 per cent didn’t know the legal drink driving limit in England and Wales while 76 per cent were unaware of the change in the speeding law.

From dashboard symbols to drink driving laws, participants from Evesham and the surrounding areas were tested on 10 basic roadworthy questions.

Eating while driving, though not advised, is not illegal. But 30 per cent of Evesham motorists think it could be.

More than one in ten are unaware of the changes in the law for using a phone while driving while despite the national campaign on speeding, 76 per cent were unaware of a change in the law.

As part of the 50,000 plus motorists nationwide who took the roadworthy test, 2,700 of those were new drivers who had been on the road for less than six months.

Almost a third of new drivers were unable to recognise the fog light symbol, more than one in three don’t know it is illegal to use their phone to pay for a drive thru, and 69 per cent are unaware of the legal drink driving limit, raising the question of whether learner motorists still need to be better educated.

Ryan Vince from Halfords Autocentres, the company responsible for the quiz, said: “The research has led to some eye-opening results.

“For example, it’s worrying that 76 per cent of Evesham drivers don’t know the maximum fine for speeding and 62 per cent of drivers were in the dark about the rules for worn tyres which could land them with a hefty fine.

“Whilst light-hearted, our test helps to reinforce and remind motorists of key roadworthy basics, whether they’re new or experienced.”
