CREATIVE minds in the De Montfort School Robotics squad have entered two qualifying events for this year’s National VEX Robotics Finals held in Telford on March 2 and 3.

At the end of last year TDMS hosted a qualifying round and won the event paired with a team from Sheffield. Then on Saturday, January 20 TDMS took three robots to Nottingham and performed brilliantly.

After the 36 rounds of qualifying all three teams were in the top eight with hopes to pair two of their teams in the knockout stage together.

Their hopes weren’t realised as the teams played each other in the semi final instead. The school’s sixth form squad emerged triumphant and went on to win the competition with King Henry V111 School from Coventry.

This is the fifth consecutive year students Lewis Day, Peter Lamb, Charlie Cox and Chris Morris have reached the national finals, previously coming runners-up losing 2-1 in the final and qualifying for the International finals in the USA last year.

And hopes are high the famous five can become national champions, especially as this year marks the last time they can compete in the competition.

A school spokesperson said: “The future is bright for Robotics with many year six to year ten students interested and performing well at the event and we are hoping for many years of success.

“We would like to thank our sponsors ABSSAC, who have sponsored the team over the last 5 years and the team are proudly wearing the tops they provided for us.”
