THE GREAT and the good turned out in Evesham for the annual Big Evesham Town Spring Clean last Sunday.

More than 80 volunteers along with two dogs joined forces to rid the town of cigarette butts, discarded cans and other assorted junk filling 45 bags of rubbish.

Organised by Anti Litter Evesham, the impressive turnout of townsfolk enjoyed bonding and bonhomie whilst the sun shone in compliance.

Among the participating individuals and organisations were Nigel Huddleston MP, Coun Craig Reeves, Evesham Town Council, Droitwich and Evesham Labour Party, Evesham Vale WI and Vale of Evesham Civic Society (VECS).

VECS chair Gill Pawson said: “Our members joined with volunteers from many of the town’s organisations to carry out a thorough litter pick of the areas that we were each sent out to.

“Luckily, the sun shone and the wind did not blow, so between us all we collected dozens of blue bags of rubbish.

“Volunteers reached into some unlikely spots to clear long accumulated rubbish and other locations that we were unable to deal with are being reported to the appropriate landowner to take action.

“What a difference two hours once a year makes to our town,” she said and questioned whether there should be an autumn litter pick as well?

Organiser Laura Van Toller was extremely thankful to everyone who gave up their Sunday morning to support the campaign.

She said: “I salute you all for showing how much pride you have in our town.”

After two hours of graft, their community-minded efforts were generously rewarded with a drink on the house at The Red Lion pub in Market Square courtesy of landlord Tom Doggett.
