Evesham Editorial 23rd Apr, 2021   0

WORCESTESHIRE’S NHS heroes will be honoured with almost 1,000 asparagus spears as the annual celebration of the famous Gras kicks off.

The first cut of the season will be delivered to the Worcestershire Royal Hospital on National Asparagus Day today (Friday) in recognition of those on the frontline in the fight against Coronavirus.

Chief Nurse Paula Gardner will be on hand to receive nearly 1,000 asparagus spears from Gus the Asparagus Man, which will then be distributed amongst staff.

A two-month celebration of the venerable vegetable will be marked with a slimmed down celebration at The Fleece Inn in Bretforton.

The first cut asparagus will be blessed and then Asparamancer Jemima Packington will make predictions for the year ahead.

The asparagus will then be taken to the hospital for the handover.
