LAST Sunday more than 40,000 people ran in the London Marathon on what was the warmest day in the event’s history.
Over the years millions of pounds have been raised for the chosen charities of the runners, benefitting the lives of thousands of people.
Again this year there were striking pictures of those who had to be helped by others because the heat had taken its toll on many of the competitors.
No doubt some of those who, by their selfless attitude, helped their fellow competitors and gave up the chance of achieving their own personal best time.
I am sure each of us can think of times when we have helped others by forgoing our own pleasures but we realise that it was worth it in the end.
When Jesus Christ was carrying his cross through Jerusalem, he kept collapsing because of the beatings he had received from the guards and so a man from the crowd, Simon of Cyrene, was ordered by the soldiers to carry the cross for the Lord.
To Simon what seemed like an ordinary day, in fact turned out to be an extraordinary day, one that he would never forget for the rest of his life, because he had come into contact with Jesus.
Meeting Jesus Christ can bring a new perspective into our lives, one that will change our view on God’s love and one that we will always remember.
