THE LECTURER told his art students, ‘For your assignment this week I want you to paint a picture depicting the essence of Peace’.
The majority painted scenes of tranquillity and serenity whilst two of them showed quite different aspects of the theme.
The one showed a mighty waterfall with a tree on a ledge halfway down which had a branch overhanging the mighty torrent. On the branch was a nest with the bird sitting on its eggs.
The second one was a scene of wild horses galloping around a still lake where one horse had stopped to have a drink oblivious to all its companions rushing around him.
This is the holiday period when families should be enjoying themselves away from the pressures of everyday life, but how often holiday times can also be times of pressure with the packing and travelling.
We live in a world that is constantly calling for Peace in its troubled areas of conflict.
But where will that Peace come from?
Jesus Christ told his disciples and ultimately us, “Peace I leave with you: my Peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid”.
As the bird and the horse in the pictures, let us seek those times of Peace and tranquillity and remember those words of Jesus Christ and let them be a reality in our everyday lives.
