From Wednesday, March 2nd to Thursday, April 14th is the ‘Season of Lent’ as celebrated in the Christian Church worldwide.
Looking in the dictionary we find the word ‘lent’ is also the past tense of the verb to ‘lend’.
Thinking about this, it occurred to me that the word ‘lent’ could also be used in this context with reference to this period in the Christian Church.
This Sunday is “Palm Sunday” which leads us into Easter Week.
This is the day which commemorates the time when Jesus Christ rode into Jerusalem on a donkey, with the crowds all shouting their ‘Hosannas’ and ‘Alleluias’, but just a few days later they were shouting, “Crucify Him”.
God ‘lent’ Jesus Christ to us here on earth for a period of time, with special emphasis on the forty days leading up to His death on the cross.
All that God is, was embodied in His Son, who lived amongst people like us, and shared that reality so that we could know Him as Lord and Saviour.
As we enjoy our chocolate eggs and hot cross buns, let us think about the real meaning of Easter and realise what it can mean to each one of us in our present day situations.
