Something to Think About

Evesham Editorial 26th Mar, 2017   0

I WAS just five years old when my father tragically died leaving my mother a widow at the age of 43.

Back then, in the late 1940s, the widows’ pension was a mere ‘pittance’ so my mother did part time employment so that she would always be there for me when I came home from school.

Whilst I had good aunts and uncles who assisted us as they could, I learnt a whole lot from the experience that has helped me over the intervening years.

During the next twelve years I watched and learnt as my mother coped with all the situations that came her way until she was able to happily marry again.

This Sunday is Mothering Sunday when we should be remembering and respecting all that our mothers have done for us.

I can’t personally thank my mother now, because she died some years ago but she always knew how much I appreciated all that she did for me.

As Jesus Christ hung on the cross, dying in agony, he looked down and saw his mother Mary, weeping and distraught. His friend John who was also a disciple stood there too.

We read in the bible ‘that Jesus said to his mother, “Dear woman, here is your son”, and to his friend John, “Here is your mother”.

From that time on, this friend made a place for Mary in his home.’

Jesus Christ still has that compassion and love for each of us, whether we are a mother, father, son or daughter.
