ACCORDING to press reports a Russian politician has proposed legalising football hooliganism and making it a sport.
It would seem that he has drafted rules for a ‘draka’ – the Russian word for fight – featuring 20 unarmed combatants on each side.
This politician, who seemed to encourage Russian hooligans during the Euro 2016 football tournament, said that the event could attract as many spectators as a football match.
Last Saturday two highly paid footballers were involved in a ‘bust up’ when one stepped on the other ones head as he lay on the ground, who then subsequently jumped up and elbowed his opponent in the jaw.
Down through the centuries we realise that human beings have been fascinated at watching other people endeavouring to harm each other.
Some years ago I watched a film of the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ in which the crowd all sat around watching the gruesome spectacle and eating their packed lunches. How bizarre!
As Jesus hung there in terrible agony he looked out over the crowd and prayed, “Father, forgive them for they do not know what they are doing”.
In fact he looked beyond that multitude and down through the ages to today, to you and me and he says the same thing, because it may be possible that we would have acted in the same way had we have been living then.
Let us realise that Jesus wants to be part of our lives and bring us the Love, Joy and Peace from his Father, God.
