Socks on show to support Down Syndrome Day

ODD socks were part of the uniform at St Andrew’s CE School in Hampton for one day only as staff and youngsters marked World Down Syndrome Day.

The event is marked every year when people come together to raise public awareness about the genetic condition.

The day was created to celebrate the lives of people with Down’s syndrome and to make sure they have the same freedoms and opportunities as everybody else.

This year’s theme was ‘leave no one behind,’ to emphasise that all people with Down’s syndrome must have opportunities to live fulfilling lives, and to be included on a full and equal basis with others, in all aspects of society.

As well as the mismatched footwear, pupils and staff used the #LotsOfSocks hashtag on Twitter to raise awareness of the cause.

Socks have been used as the symbol because chromosomes are shaped ‘like socks’ and people with Down’s syndrome are born with an extra one.
