THE smoke seen coming from a shop at the Riverside Shopping Centre was caused by an electrical fault.

Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service said two crews from Evesham were called to the town centre at about 2.15pm this afternoon.

Smoke was seen coming from the Clinton Cards shop which was caused by a heater fault. Firefighters also checked the surrounding premises and isolated the heater.

An investigation will now be carried out into the cause of the fault.

A spokeswoman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said paramedics were not called to the scene.

An eyewitness said the shopping centre was closed as a result of the incident.

Speaking to the Observer, Merridy Davies said: “All I saw was two fire engines, alarm bells going throughout the car park, smoke coming from Clinton Cards and firemen all gearing up to go in with a ladder.”
