Six foot sub fills up charity’s fund

SHOPPERS were invited to grab a piece of a six foot sub baked by staff at Subway as the store marked its 20th birthday by raising cash for the Tracy Sollis Leukaemia Trust.

Blearly-eyed bakers began preparing the mammoth treat at 3am on Saturday (June 29) and the giant sub, made up of ham, turkey, spicy italian, veggies and cheese, was then divided up into 100 pieces for shoppers to enjoy.

It was a clear favourite with the people of Evesham who bought every last piece, which raised more than £100 for charity. This was matched by store owners James and Andrea Fleck, bringing the total raised on the day to £215.45.

James said: “It was a really fun day and a great way to mark our anniversary. The people of Evesham were really happy to get involved and were amazed by the efforts of our team of bakers.

“It was also lovely to have the Evesham Concert Band play outside the store, which included Sue Sollis, founder of the Tracy Sollis Leukaemia Trust.”

Sue said: “It was a real unexpected and brilliant surprise to know that Subway were going to support us as part of their 20 year celebrations.

“It was a brilliant fun day and was amazing to see this enormous six foot sub – it was really tasty!”.

“I am very grateful to everyone at Subway, Evesham for all their hard work in organising this special event. Who would have thought one sandwich could raise so much,” she added.

Mascot Subman was also on hand to give out balloons to local children to mark the store’s 20th anniversary.

When it opened its doors in 1999, it was only the 23rd in the UK. Today there are more than 2,600 locations across the UK and Ireland.

James and Andrea came over from Canada to open the store in Evesham and thanked everyone who has supported their business over the last 20 years.

“We have received so much support from the people of Evesham, we really wanted to say thank you. When the store first opened in 1999, there were very few Subway stores in the UK and the brand awareness was very low,” he said.

“In 2019, the Subway brand has grown to become one of the world’s largest businesses and we are still here in the heart of the High Street.”

“I have been proud to call the Vale of Evesham home for the past twenty years. I have made lots of great friends and memories and am very thankful that Evesham has provided the foundation that grew this business from small beginnings to being an important part of a global brand,” he added.
