Silver band striking up

THE FINEST Vale asparagus will be up for auction during the popular event held by Bretforton Silver Band at the historic Fleece Inn in Bretforton.

Asparagus enthusiasts will make the journey to the National Trust pub on Sunday (May 26) to bid for The ‘Hundred’ of gras, which is undoubtedly the creme de la creme of asparagus.

The evening raises funds for the village silver band and John Wood, the band’s conductor, revealed this year could be a vintage year for the king of all vegetables.

The highlight of the evening will be the auction of an exhibition bundle of asparagus which is traditionally tied by local grower Bill Byrd using stripped willow twigs.

Colin Jelfs, who is auctioneer for the evening, will tell the eager crowd that the gras has side effects with some saying it is an aphrodisiac although the downside is that it can give your urine a distinctive smell.

The evening starts at 6.30pm with Morris dancing, music from Bretforton Silver Band and much more.
