Scam alert after bogus caller claims to be police officer

AN ELDERLY Pershore woman was targeted by a bogus caller who claimed to be a police officer and attempted to get her to send money.

West Mercia Police are urging residents to be alert following the attempted scam.

Last Thursday the elderly victim received a phone call from an unknown man who claimed he was a detective at Holborn Police Station and had arrested someone in London.

The scammer then told the woman that her credit cards had fallen into criminal hands and asked her to go to the bank and withdraw a sum of money and send to on an address in London.

West Mercia Police said: “Police would never call and ask you to withdraw money, if you get this type of call clear the line immediately. Ensure the line is cleared before making any further calls, if in doubt use another phone.”
