THE VALE’s famous Gras was taken to the heart of Europe this week as a delegation travelled to the European Parliament.

Chair of the British Asparagus Festival Nigel Smith and Gus the Asparagus Man were part the group visiting Brussels to deliver a round of Vale of Evesham asparagus to the European Parliament.

The trip was a thank you to the EU for granting Vale of Evesham asparagus Protected Geographical Indicator Status earlier this year, giving it the iconic status alongside Champagne, Roquefort Cheese, Cornish Pasties and Darjeeling Tea.

Nigel Smith said: “We are delivering this on behalf of Worcestershire, to say thank you for putting us on the global food map.

“As a Worcestershire Ambassador and resident of the county, I am honoured that our asparagus has been recognised in this way.

“We want to shout about Worcestershire and encourage lots of people to come and visit this beautiful county, specifically the Vale of Evesham, enjoy our sights, soak up our countryside and of course eat our asparagus,” he added.

The delegation also included tourism chiefs from Wychavon District Council and Worcestershire growers and restaurateurs.
