A PLEDGE by the new Home Secretary Sajid Javid to ensure police officers have the resources they need has been welcomed by West Mercia’s Police and Crime Commissioner.

John Campion spoke after Mr Javid’s speech to the Police Federation last week in which he axed former Home Secretary’s Theresa May’s tough rhetoric in a bid to woo officers.

The Home Secretary used his first speech to the federation to extend an olive branch after years of angry clashes between officers and ministers.

Speaking at the conference, Mr Javid drew on personal experience to talk about the impact the job can have on family life and the times his brother was assaulted.

His brother Bas is now a chief superintendent and the Home Secretary sought to try and convince the federation he understood the challenges facing the police

He acknowledged police work can take its toll on mental and physical health and said that officers ‘deserve to be respected and valued’.

The MP for nearby Bromsgrove talked about his own experiences in the West Mercia area recognising the work of officers locally and made a commitment to working with PCCs to ensure police are properly resourced.

Mr Campion was among those in attendance at the conference and said: “The Home Secretary’s commitment to frontline policing, echoes my own commitment to communities locally.

“Assaults on police officers aren’t acceptable and I am pleased Sajid Javid has highlighted this.

“In West Mercia alone, there are on average two assaults on officers and staff every day. I have been campaigning for people to see the person Behind the Badge, and it’s important that the police are respected for their hard work, professionalism and all they do for communities.

“I am pleased to hear West Mercia officers being recognised. I have seen first hand how our police do an extraordinary role, and I agree with the Home Secretary we must protect and be proud of the police.

“I look forward to working with the Home Secretary in the future, to deliver safer, more secure communities for the public and the police,” he added.
