Roadworks on hold to give firms a festive break

MAJOR roadwork schemes on key routes across Worcestershire will be put on pause until the New Year to allow local businesses to make the most of the festive boost to trade.

It’s the second year Worcestershire County Council has put the measure in place having received positive feedback following the move from both business owners and shoppers last year. It covers Worcester city centre and all towns within the county.

Road improvement schemes will start again on January 4. Emergency works will still take place if necessary such as water and gas leaks.

Coun Mike Rouse, cabinet member for Highways and Transport, said: “We always negotiate planned roadworks to minimise disruption wherever possible.”

“This embargo on planned roadworks throughout Worcestershire was strongly welcomed last year, as businesses continued their recovery from the pandemic.

“The decision to run it again this year will help to give traders and shoppers a less disruptive run up to the Christmas season, whether they choose to drive, cycle or catch the bus.

“Let’s shop local and support our traders and we hope this measure on our part helps residents do just that.”

Samantha McCarthy, chief executive of Worcester BID, said: “This embargo is very welcome to Worcester BID member businesses in the city centre. It permits a smoother, easier journey as visitors and shoppers travel into the city which in turn allows everyone to better support our local independent retailers at what is the busiest trading time of the year.

“We would encourage shoppers to take advantage of the embargo and come into the city centre to enjoy the seasonal lighting and additional displays that Worcester BID and has put on to enhance Worcester at this time of year.”
