Rival teams step up for challenge in 40-mile trek

A RALLYING call for support has gone out from eight members of staff at Evesham-based Kanes Foods as they go head-to-head to raise money for Action Medical Research.

The eight staff have formed two rival teams – Kanes Rambling Rebels and Kanes Cotswold Crusaders – and are taking on the 40-mile ‘Trek the Night’ charity walk on Saturday, June 1, which starts at midnight and includes hiking across the Cotswold Way, taking in both the Cotswold Hills and Severn Vale.

Kanes Rambling Rebels, which includes Maria Pedro (quality assurance auditor), Jennie Waldron (environmental manager), Zoe Seagrove (company microbiologist), and Laura Elam (new product development technologist) are training hard and are determined to beat their colleagues.

However, Kanes Cotswold Crusaders, made up of David Fletcher (engineering manager), Harry Scarrott (account manager), Tomas Bartasiunas (payroll assistant) and Diana Sileine-Sileiko (process leader) are quietly confident they will come out on top.

The endurance challenge is expected to take between 12 and 17 hours to complete and will see the teams watch the sun rise and also walk most of Sunday too. Both teams have to raise a minimum of £1,500 each and they are appealing to the local community to get behind them to support the UK charity in its research to help defeat the diseases which devastate the lives of sick and disabled babies, children and young people.

Laura Elam, the captain of the Kanes Rambling Rebels team, said: “This is going to be a real test of our stamina and determination for both teams.

“However, we are really excited to take on Trek the Night and raise money for such worthwhile causes.”

Tony Walsh, marketing controller and support vehicle driver for the teams, said: “Action Medical Research is a fantastic charity and as a company we like to test ourselves and take on challenges so Trek the Night really appeals.

“We have colleagues from across the business coming together, so this will be a test to see how our teams bond and support each other. The teams are currently training individually and together and are being put through their paces, so they are ready for this endurance challenge.
