REVISED plans to extend Hampton Cemetery have been given the green light by Town Council planning chiefs after concerns about access to the site were addressed.
In September councillors on Evesham Town Council’s planning committee approved proposals which will see an extra 273 plots created to boost the cemetery which currently has no space for burials.
The new plots could ensure spaces for an estimated seven to 10 years.
Depending on how deep the graves can be dug, the total number of plots would be broken up into 145 double plots and 128 single plots.
As a condition to approve the plans, councillors called for the proposals to be revised to see if a car park could be added.
A highways officer from Worcestershire County Council then visited the site to discuss what provision could be made for parking at the cemetery to help relieve the issue with congestion on Pershore Road when funerals take place.
As a result a revised plan has now been drawn up which includes proposals for a small car park located at the east of the cemetery. Funeral vehicles will then be able to use the car park and will no longer have to park at the front of the church.
And at Monday’s planning committee meeting councillors approved the revised plans.
Speaking at the meeting, Coun Alan Booth said: “If it is going to take traffic off the road this is something we should approve. Its terrible when there is a funeral down there and the more we can get people off the road the better.”
