RESIDENTS will be able to get into the Christmas spirit at a new lantern parade coming to Evesham Market Square on November 27.
The event has been organised by the Battle of Evesham Festivals team and will be held in conjunction with The Rotary Tree of Light switch-on which takes place on the same evening.
Participants in the Lantern Parade should gather in the town square between 5.15pm and 5.30pm when the procession will set off.
The parade itself
The Lantern Parade will be led by The Battle of Evesham team which will bring re-enactors of the Twin Tailed Lion, including Simon De Montfort, Prince Edward and their knights.
They will escort hundreds of families through the darkness of Abbey Park in a spectacular demonstration of lantern-creativity.
The lanterns will make a beautiful sight and the Evesham Operatic and Dramatic Society (EODs) singers will make it all even more atmospheric.
The parade will arrive at Workman Bridge around 6.15pm when the Tree of Light switch-on event will have just started.
Children and parents with or without lanterns, dressed up or not, will walk across the bridge, singing carols, led by EODs singers and accompanied by the Avonbank Brass Band.
There, a few very short speeches will take place and the countdown for the Tree of Light switch-on, led by the Mayor of Evesham, Coun John Clatworthy, will start.
Trevor Battersby, from the Battle of Evesham, said: “We hope after that, everybody will participate in the event with music, drinks and food.”
He added it would be a fantastic way for people to welcome in the Christmas season by taking part in this fun community event with families and friends.
There will be no charge for the event, which is free to attend and participate in.
Those wanting to create their own lantern for the parade can visit: therotaryclubofevesham.org.uk for more on how to make one.
People can also visit the website to make donations and to add their loved ones’ names to the Book of Remembrance.
The Rotary Tree of Light raises funds for many charities, as well as help remember loved ones no longer with us.
They will be represented through the lights which will reflect and dance on the surface of the River Avon for the upcoming festive season.
