Residents’ fury as Virgin Media workers ‘destroy’ street

AN ANGRY Evesham resident has accused Virgin Media of the ‘destruction’ of his street as a result of the ‘shoddy’ state the pavements and grass verges were left in after they installed fibre optic cabling.

Rob Cameron, who has lived in Jasmine Walk for the past 10 years, has been left furious and is now concerned people could be put off from buying his home in the future as a result of the patchy and ‘mismatched’ tarmac.

Virgin Media are currently installing fibre optic cabling across the town and began digging up the pavements and roads on the Thistledown estate back in January.

Mr Cameron has since lodged a number of complaints with the media giant over the work carried out by contractors.

The catalogue of complaints made by the angry resident includes workmen walking over resident’s gardens, putting barriers on his front lawn without permission and damaging the kerbs and grass verges.

Speaking to the Observer, Mr Cameron has called on Virgin Media bosses to ‘do the right thing’ and return the street to how they found it before the work was carried out.

“It looks like a mismatched mess, it’s of a poor standard and it is already coming up in places,” he said.

“They haven’t left it how they found it.

“Within two weeks they already began digging up areas they had previously dug up.

“Virgin Media need to stop hiding behind the minimum amount of work they have to do under regulations and do the right thing.

“They will continue to do shoddy work unless we highlight it. A lot of people are annoyed and angry with what they are doing, but feel saying something won’t change anything as they [Virgin Media] will continue to hide behind regulations.”

Responding to Mr Cameron’s complaints, Virgin Media told the Observer they did not believe the reinstated pavements would have an impact on anyone buying or selling houses within the street.

A spokesperson said: “Virgin Media is currently expanding its fibre optic network in Evesham to bring ultrafast broadband speeds to more homes and businesses in the area.

“As we do so, we endeavour to minimise disruption to the local community and work with our contractors and the local authorities to ensure that work is carried out with professionalism and at the highest standard. In the case of Jasmine Walk, we apologise to the local residents for any inconvenience we may have caused.”
