FIVE people were rescued from a narrow boat after it became wedged under a bridge on the River Avon.

Hereford and Worcester Fire Service were called to Eckington Bridge at about 3pm yesterday (Monday) to rescue those who were stranded on the vessel.

Specialist water first responders from Pershore and water rescue vehicles from Worcester and Evesham were deployed to recover and secure the boat.

It’s not clear how the narrow boat became wedged under the bridge, but the River Avon had risen following heavy rain as a result of Storm Katie.

No was injured in the incident.

A Hereford and Worcester Fire Service spokesperson said: “Water First Responders from Pershore attended along with Water Rescue Vehicles from Worcester and Evesham.

“All five people were rescued and a general purpose line was used to secure the boat whilst each occupant was fitted with a life jacket.

“The narrow boat was recovered and moored by Fire Service personnel.”
