RECORD sales of Vale of Evesham asparagus are being reported by town stockists as patriotic food lovers prepared for the coronation of King Charles with a taste of the famous ‘Gras.
Sales of the delicious spears are on the rise across the county with businesses reporting people are travelling from across the UK to track down asparagus.
Tom Campbell, who owns Wayside Farm Shop and Cafe in the Vale of Evesham, is experiencing record sales with people driving from Swindon, Bristol, and the North of England to get their bunches.
Other Worcestershire-based stockists of Vale of Evesham asparagus are reporting similar stories.
The King of Veg is in short supply due to the recent cold and wet growing conditions and the scarcity has only made the demand more intense.
Speaking about the soaring sales, Tom said: “I’ve never known anything like it. As soon as we put any asparagus out in the shop, it sells.
“Given the short, two-month British asparagus season, it’s always been the ideal food for a celebration and what better excuse is there than the coronation of King Charles?
