Ramblers install new bridle-bridge along beautiful Vale walk

KIND-HEARTED members of Evesham Rambling Club rolled up their sleeves to tackle a major project on the Wychavon Way.

Buoyed on by success installing roadside bridle gates, footbridges, fencing and waymark posts, Evesham Rambling Club decided to take on a much larger project on the route above Craycombe Bank.

A working party of ten members, supported by four staff from the Worcestershire County Council Countryside Service, took on the task of installing a bridle-bridge.

The structure, which measured four metres by 2.5 metres, replaced a simple bridge that was in poor repair.

Members split into two groups – six volunteers putting in additional bridle gates, whilst the remaining four prepared the groundwork for the bridge.

In less than two hours, the bridle gates were in place, with fencing on each side repaired and strengthened.

At this point, and after pausing to enjoy refreshments, the whole team began the actual construction of the bridle-bridge.

In order to allow two horses to pass one another, these bridges are much wider than conventional footbridges.

After much lifting, hammering, drilling, nailing and sawing, the bridge started to take shape.

Due in part to the scale of the project and in part to the shortness of the day, the party was under pressure to complete the construction in the dusk.

Footpath secretary Alan Saunders, said: “With just enough light to gather up tools and pose for a group photograph, the working party could reflect on another successful project in its efforts to help improve the rights of way around Evesham.”
