RAF centenary celebrations land in town this weekend

A MAJOR event to mark 100 years of the Royal Air Force will see celebrations arrive in Evesham over the weekend.

Tokens representing the three founding components of the RAF are travelling from branch to branch throughout Wales, the Midlands and the South West and a token representing Major General Hugh Trenchard will be arriving at Market Place on Sunday at 2pm.

Organisers will be met by Mayor of Evesham Coun Mark Goodge and after a short stay with the towm branch the token will depart for Kidderminster next Sunday at 10am.

The journey will see the token taken through Hampton and Pershore on its way by 90-year-old Jeff Brereton, veteran of the Battle of Britain and the Second World War and is the vice chair of the Royal Air Forces Association Evesham branch.




In 2018 the Royal Air Force will be 100 years old, having been formed on the 1 April 1918 by the amalgamation of the Royal Navel Air Service and the Royal Flying Corps; the first commander of the new organisation was Major General Hugh Trenchard.

The Wales, Midland and South Western Area of the Royal Air Forces Association, the charity that supports the RAF family, is marking this auspicious anniversary throughout 2018 and the Evesham Branch will be participating in the celebrations.


A RAF spokesperson said: “We would like to invite as many guests as possible to join us at either the arrival or the departure of the token to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Royal Air Force.”
