Police message to dog walkers during lambing season

Tristan Harris 10th Mar, 2026   0

POLICE in Evesham have been visiting farmers and rural businesses to raise awareness of livestock worrying.

As lambing season approaches, officers have been putting up posters and reminding all dog owners of their responsibility to help protect rural communities.

Sheep worrying remains a significant and recurring issue in the area, leading to serious injury, the loss of livestock and a considerable emotional and financial impact on local farmers.

Dog owners are urged to keep their pets on a lead when walking near livestock – even well-trained dogs can act unpredictably because of their instincts.

They should also remain on marked footpaths and stay vigilant as sheep may be present in fields even when not visible.

Owners who live near farmland should ensure gardens are secure as dogs escaping, especially overnight can cause extensive harm before being discovered.

Sheep worrying is a criminal offence and West Mercia Police will take action against dog owners whose animals are chased, harassed or attacked.

Owners should report of incidents of livestock worrying as soon as possible to allow the police to gather evidence, identify animals involved and take the necessary enforcement action.
