THE PERSHORE and District Branch of the Royal British Legion (RBL) has received a prestigious award for its efficiency throughout 2016.

The branch recently scooped the ‘Taffy Matthews Trophy for Efficiency’ from Worcestershire president Ken Draper, at the RBL’s annual conference at County Hall.

During the event, David Waldron, RBL county chairman, singled out the Pershore and District Branch for their efforts in the Somme 100 Concert and 2016 Poppy Concert.

Lt Col Susan Payne, branch president, and Simon Dudfield, branch chairman, also attended the conference.

It is the second year running the branch has received an award, after being presented with the ‘Runners Up Trophy’ in the 2015 efficiency category.

Gareth Jenkins, branch secretary, said: “The conference opened with the tribute and the Kohima Epitaph and we were asked to remember the 95 members in the county who passed away during the past year.

“Mr Draper then presented his report and emphasised despite the legion losing members overall in 2016, Worcestershire had bucked the trend by increasing its membership by some 15 per cent.

“The highlight of the conference was when the honorary French consul awarded two Legion D’Honneur medals to legion members, who received a standing ovation.”
