A HORTICULTURE student from Pershore has won the national title of Best Landscape Student of the Year.

Josh Reid was awarded the regional prize earlier this year and has now emerged from the BALI (British Association of Landscape Industries) National Landscape Awards as the overall UK-wide winner.

The 21-year-old is studying landscape architecture at Birmingham City University but won the title as recognition of work carried our during his Level 3 Horticulture course at Pershore College.

He received his award in a virtual ceremony which brought together professionals from across the industry.

BALI is the UK’s largest trade association for professional garden designers, landscapers and ground maintenance contractors.

The BALI Chalk Fund was set up in memory of a founding member of the British Association of Landscape Industries and supports education and training in the landscape sector.

It seeks to recognise the achievements of landscape students who have excelled in their studies.

Josh says he was shocked to win the award and had been delighted to win the regional title, let alone the national.

He said: “It was very much a surprise to win the award. Clive Evans, my tutor at Pershore, said he thought I had a good chance, but I didn’t quite believe him up until I heard the news.

“Clive put me forward for the original regional award too and has been a great support in getting to this stage in my development.

“In the future I hope to work in urban environments by creating more green space in those areas and that’s what was reflected when putting me forward for the award.

“The award signals the closing of the chapter of my life with Pershore College which is quite emotional really.

“The college has been a big part of my life and I would like to thank the tutors for their support over the last four years.”

Josh spent four years studying at Pershore College from Level 1 to Level 3, and was tutored by Clive Evans during that time.

Clive, who is a tutor in landscaping at the college, added: “We’re all delighted for Josh and he should be very proud of his achievement.

“The award is recognition of his hard work over the last four years he spent with us and we’re sure he will continue that during his studies in Birmingham.

“To win the regional title is a great achievement and to then go on and win the national is magnificent.”
