PERSHORE’s MP Harriett Baldwin has left her role as Africa Minister to return to the back-benches.
The West Worcestershire MP made the decision 24 hours after the election of Boris Johnson as Prime Minister.
Mrs Baldwin was moved to a dual role at the Foreign Office and Department of International Development in January last year.
Her return to the back-benches brings an end to a five year ministerial career which has seen her work in the whips office, at the Ministry of Defence and at the Treasury.
Mrs Baldwin was a prominent supporter of leadership challenger Jeremy Hunt in the election which saw Mr Johnson emerge on top.
The Prime Minister has made headlines with a cull of Theresa May’s former cabinet and is currently making currently making major changes to ministerial posts.
Among those replaced was Mr Hunt who was succeeded as Foreign Secretary by Brexit-backing Dominic Raab.
Mrs Baldwin revealed her decision on Twitter and said: “As Hyman Roth says ‘This is the business we’ve chosen’.
“It has been an honour to serve in the Foreign Office, DFID, Defence, the Treasury and in the Whips office.
“I’ll be supporting Boris Johnson and his excellent team of ministers from back benches.”
