HOW a community group saved a 200-year-archive of Worcestershire newspapers is the subject of next week’s February monthly meeting of Pershore Heritage and History Society.
Guest speaker Chris Wilkinson will tell the story of how after a tip off, Worcester Civic Society members stepped in to stop more than 250 bound Berrow’s Journals dating from 1801 to the 1990s from being lost to posterity.
Their haul also included 120 boxes of cuttings and photographs and more than a million black and white and colour negatives and 150 glass plate negatives dating from 1936.
It is understood that if the civic society members had not acted quickly the whole of this important archive including lots of images of Worcester, Pershore and Evesham and surrounds would have been thrown away.
Organiser Julian Palfrey said: “With humorous moments throughout, Chris will give a light hearted and entertaining account on interesting topics of years gone by.”
The meeting takes place at 7pm on Thursday, February 5 at the new venue of the committee room at the Civic Centre, off Station Road, WR10 1PT.
Parking is available and admission costs £3 for non members.
