Pantry project going greener thanks to jute bag supplier

A TOWN charity which provides food for families in need is now also helping to promote the reduction of plastic waste following a donation from market-leading reusable bag supplier Jutexpo.

The jute bags will be given to the people being helped by the Evesham Adventure Playground Association (EAPA) Playground Pantry project, eliminating the need for them to use plastic carrier bags.

The association, based at Woodlands is a registered charity which provides a wide range of services to help local families.

For the last two years it has been running a Pie and Play scheme, using food donated from local supermarkets and suppliers to feed children in the community for free, helping to ease the school holiday hunger issue that many children experience.

This scheme has now expanded with the creation of the Playground Pantry project, which works closely with the local food bank and the area’s health visitor team as well as the local Morrisons, Aldi, Lidl and Tesco stores and Evesham-based Primafruit Ltd.

It allows local families access to free food and necessities such as toiletries and washing powder without the need for a referral.

One of the messages the scheme is trying to promote is reducing waste and recycling and the jute bags donated by Jutexpo, the world’s biggest supplier of reusable jute and juco bags, will help reduce waste even further.

Each bag has the charity’s logo printed on the side and they will be given out to families using the Playground Pantry to promote the scheme.

Volunteer Kath Jones, secretary of the Evesham Adventure Playground Association, said: “We are a local charity, trying to ensure children, young people and families have the space to have fun together in an environment that challenges, inspires the mind and body.

“However, we also offer a service to local families where they can come and help themselves to the food, without the need for a referral and we are also trying to promote reducing waste and encourage recycling.

“To that end the donation of jute bags by Jutexpo is a great way to get our message across and help reduce waste even further.”
