Panto ready to start climbing the green shoots of recovery

A LONG-SERVING member of Norton Theatre Group will mark more than three decades since she first trod the boards at the age of six by directing this year’s pantomime.

The group will return after a year of isolation with the classic tale of Jack and The Beanstalk.

Thanks to her sons’ dodgy deal involving a cow and a handful of beans, Dame Tilly Trott has a huge beanstalk in the front garden of her house in the village of Snuggerly Bottom. What’s more, her dodgy landlord wants his rent.

How can our heroes get rich quick, and can they save Jack’s girlfriend from the evil clutches of the hungry, grumpy giant?

Once again, written by their resident scriptwriter Chris Bennion and produced by group founder Les Simms with the help of long-time member Sara Lattey, the group are back and keen to get back in front of an audience after a year off.

“It’s been tough for everyone the past couple of years but we are so excited to be able to get back to doing what we love, entertaining people,” said Sara.

The groups future was in doubt recently after several key members announced their retirement, but with an influx of new cast and crew volunteers, there is a whole new energy and determination to put on a tremendously funny and entertaining pantomime.

And directing the pantomime is long time member Sarah Bennion, who first trod the Norton stage some 32 years ago.

“I am so excited to be directing for the first time. We have a wonderful script and a fantastic cast which make my job easier. I am loving it, so far. We have some great songs, the young chorus are doing amazingly well and rehearsals are so much fun,” she said.

“Of course, we are very aware of people’s feelings about social distancing and being safe, which is why we will be taking precautions and being aware of government guidelines. Hand and furniture sanitiser, masks when moving about, temperature checks and we are advising all our cast, crew and guests to take an LFT before they join us.”

Jack and the Beanstalk is being performed at Norton Parish Hall, Littleworth, Worcester, WR5 2QB from Thursday, January 13 to Saturday, January 15.

Tickets are £8 for adults and £5 for children and OAPs.
