Outspoken county councillor slams Japan for wartime 'barbarity'

AN OUTSPOKEN county councillor has repeated his controversial views on the use of atomic bombs at Hiroshima days before the world remembers the end of the Second World War in Japan.

Coun Alan Amos once again used the VJ Day commemorations on Saturday (August 15) to launch a stinging attack against the Japanese government for its actions during the conflict and in the years since.

The outspoken city and councillor first hit the headlines in 2015 when he claimed the world should be ‘grateful’ the Americans dropped two atomic bombs on Hiroshima to effectively bring the conflict to an end.

And ahead of this year’s commemorations, Coun Amos said the world must never forget Japanese barbarity and their ‘crimes against humanity’ which he claimed equalled anything committed by the Nazi’s.

“The Worcestershire Regiment played a valiant part in defeating Japan at the key Battle of Kohima,” he said.

“The British Army in the Far East has always been known as ‘the forgotten army’ as the Establishment has always shown a racist reluctance to properly recognize the heroes who gave their lives for this country, with many survivors left mentally traumatized for life by the Japanese viciousness they experienced.

The United States carried out two bombings of Hiroshima in August 1945, during the final stage of the Second World War.

At least 129,000 people were killed in the attacks which remain the only use of nuclear weapons for warfare in history.

Coun Amos, whose father was captured as prisoner of war by the Japanese, again slammed Japan for its failure to apologise for its crimes and claimed the country’s only regret was it ‘lost the war they started’.

“Thank goodness we had enough atom bombs to stop the war and thereby save millions of British, Empire, allied and Asian lives,” he said.

“Even today, Japanese Prime Ministers worship at the Yasukuni shrine where the hanged Japanese war criminals are buried; they have re-written their history school textbooks denying their atrocities even absurdly claiming the massacre of more than 300,000 Chinese civilians (the Rape of Nanking) was caused by the Chinese.

“They are now changing their constitution so they can rearm whilst regularly provoking China with their warmongering claims over tiny Pacific islands.

“The world did not listen or see the warnings last time. Let’s not make the same mistake again with the new threat Japan poses.”
