CARING staff members at an Evesham dementia nursing home have been shortlisted for prestigious national awards.

Mary Tasker and Peter Hall have recently been named as finalists in the National Care Awards and the National Dementia Care Awards, for their outstanding quality care to residents at The Hawthorns nursing home.

Ms Tasker, described by colleagues as ‘unique’, has been put forward for the Dementia Care Manager award and the Best Dementia Continence Care award, for transforming the town’s specialist dementia nursing home and its team of staff since she started in 2009, helping ensure residents rights and dignity are protected at all times.

Ms Tasker has also been instrumental in bringing innovative dementia therapy areas to the care home, including a ‘pop-up pub’ which recreates a traditional bar setting for residents to gather and enjoy their favourite tipple and reminisce in a familiar environment.

The Hawthorns’ maintenance worker Mr Hall, has been named as a finalist for the Outstanding Dementia Care Innovation award, for his ‘ingenious’ work in transforming the environment of the home to one which is vibrant and stimulating for residents.

Mr Hall has been commended for the way he involves residents in his work whenever he can, helping them to feel a sense of self-esteem.

He also comes up with creative ways to provide dementia therapy to residents, such as installing radios into old telephones so if a service user picked one up, they had someone talking to them at the other end giving them a sense of participation.

Zahra Conway, owner and operator of The Hawthorns said: “Mary ensures each member of the team shares her dream, passion and enthusiasm for providing people with dementia the best quality care.

“Peter has a very calming attitude which enables him to work alongside residents with confidence and patience, and is a fantastic advocate for the service users.

“He finds out what would make their lives more stimulating and does his best to bring it to fruition, by utilising his skills to improve the lives of others.”

The National Dementia Care Awards is taking place at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole on Friday November, 13, while the National Care Awards is being held on Friday November, 27 at the Hilton London Metropole.
