Mid Worcestershire MP Nigel Huddleston writes for the Observer….

THE Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games are now over and what a Games they have been! We’ve seen some incredible days of sport and a wide range of fantastic cultural and business events. It’s been amazing to see our region front and centre on the world stage – something that I hope will continue for a long time to come!

As the Minister for the Commonwealth Games, my focus now moves on towards the legacy the Games will have. As I’ve always said, this was about much more than the event itself. It’s about capitalising on the momentum of the Games to unlock the enduring benefits they can bring for the region and the wider country. I look forward to seeing the fruits of our collective efforts materialise over many months and years to come.

Another recent major sporting highlight was of course the Lionesses’ magnificent victory at Wembley, which I was privileged to attend. England women’s first ever major trophy, and the first major trophy for an England senior team in 56 years!

However, even though my Ministerial roles have been particularly consuming lately, I continued to be busy in Parliament ahead of the Summer Recess. For example, I was pleased to speak in a number of debates, including on heritage and tourism as well as sport. I was also very proud to recently launch a 12-week consultation period regarding the future of dormant assets funding in England.

Meanwhile, I know many of my constituents remain concerned about the rising cost of living. The Government has already announced a number of support measures over the past few months to help, including the Energy Bills Support scheme, through which all households will receive a cash grant of £400 to help with their energy bills. Support is available, so do please reach out if you are struggling.

Finally, the Conservative Party leadership election continues apace. I am backing Rishi Sunak, because I believe he has the character, skills and experience to be an outstanding Prime Minister and is best placed to help restore trust; rebuild the economy; and reunite the country.

I wish all my constituents a pleasant rest of the summer.”
